Pregnant women asking if fat

My friend is pregnant and asked me the other day if she looked fat.  I looked at her, and was thinking, wth?  Who cares!!  I thought this not only because she asked me, but because I’ve had numerous pregnant women over the years ask me the same thing. You are pregnant!!  You are going to gain weight.  Your stomach will get larger.  You are not fat, you are pregnant!!  What is up with this?  I can tell you in all the years that I’ve seen pregnant women walking down the street, not once did I say, wow that pregnant woman is fat, is she feeding 3???!!!  Or, wow, that pregnant woman could stand to lose some weight.  I can tell you when my sister was pregnant, I wasn’t thinking, damn my sister is fat.  I’ve heard women say things like I know I’m going to gain weight, I just hope it goes to the stomach only.  I don’t want to get fat arms, legs, face, ankles, etc.  Ummm, why is that?  Why do they care so much?  You would think this was the one time in their life that they could be free from the eternal restraint of eating what you want and getting fat since society is so mean to the overweight.

Are guys and society so bad out there that they make fun of pregnant women for being fat?  I know I’ve not heard too many jokes to that effect in my life.  Yes, I’ve heard the husband and wife joke together that she was fat and such, but they were joking with each other and it was obvious to both it was all in good fun as they both made the jokes.  I’ve playfully teased my friends too, but never insulted or looked down on.  Yes, I’m sure that there are mean spirited people out there who would be insulting, but there are always those types of people out there, and they are that way for pretty much anyone.  So, why care so much??
