Up in the Air
Up in the Air is a movie starring George Clooney as a man who travels 300k+ miles in a year all over the country visiting different companies to fire or let people go. He thus lives out of his suitcase, packing everything he needs and being home only about 30 days out of the year. But, he loves his life, traveling the skies trying to increase his frequent flier mileage, and not being tied down to any relationships, including that of his family. But, his desired way of life is threatened to his despair because of technology. But, he finally meets a girl who he may be falling for that might make that ok. But, will it?
The critics I believe loved this movie and I think it got nominated for a lot of Golden Globe nominations. After watching the movie, it looks like the typical Best Picture nominated movie that the critics love and mainstream America ignores. Its definitely for an older audience as I think the younger crowd will find this movie completely boring, as evidenced by the fact that I think we were the youngest people in the whole theater. What did I think? The movie was funny at points, and I do like George Clooney. It makes you think about what is important in life, and how what is important to you are definitely not so for other people. Clooney lived a life that many, including his young protege, found lonely and hermitlike, but he absolutely loved it and felt threatened when it might be taken from him. Overall I thought the movie was okay, but like most Best Picture worthy movies, not one I typically watch. The premise was interesting as I never knew there were companies whose purpose was to fire people (or is that just made up in this movie?). But, I’d probably not recommend this movie to my friends unless they are film buffs who like these types of movies.
