Cards are hella expensive!
I pretty much never buy birthday cards. If you get a birthday card from me, its probably because I chipped in on your gift with someone else and they bought the card and I put my name to it. I just bought a wedding card couple hours ago, and now I know why. Cards are hella expensive!!! For what they are, why the hell does a card cost more than a buck?? Its freaking thick paper folded in half!! Is there a higher profit margin consumer product out there? And please don’t tell me that you are paying for the inspirational or funny words in the cards. Those things were not created or thought of by Hallmark or American Greetings or whoever. More often than not they are poems or sayings that they probably found on the Internet and put in a card.
Yes, I know 5 bucks isn’t a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. But, look at all the things you can buy for 5 bucks that are so worth it when compared to a piece of folded paper and envelope. Yes, yes, I know there are those out there who are sentimental and they think getting or giving a card is very special and such. But, let me just ask you something. Most of the time, I do not see anyone writing in the card other than saying to and from. Maybe a short message at best. So, what makes it special? The fact that they just put their name in it? I can tell you right now that I have every letter and message that has ever been written to me in my closet. But, cards that solely have my name and signed by the giver, no. I toss those. There is nothing special about those to me. Next time you are thinking of getting me a card for any reason whatsoever, save yourself the 5 bucks. If you are just going to sign it, I’m going to toss it anyway, so its just like tossing 5 bucks away. If you really want me to think it is special and for me to keep it, write me a small note on a regular piece of paper, which will probably cost a penny at most. Less expensive, more thought provoking, and actually nice and special in my book.
