For some reason, I feel like I want to just go someplace, whether it be Vegas or wherever. True, gambling is not as fun and entertaining for me as it once was, I’ll still do so if I’m in Vegas, just not all night like I used to. Shows are always fun too, as is eating!!! I wouldn’t mind going back to that steak house Del Frisco’s Double Eagle I went to last time that had the best ribeye I’ve ever eaten at a steak house! Yes, I know its a bold statement, but that’s what I thought.
I don’t know why, but just feeling out of it of late. I’m at work just going through the motions, doing what’s assigned to me but just kind of wanting to win the lotto so that I don’t need to do so anymore. I know, I know. That’s what everyone always says they feel. However, of late, been feeling so more and more. Don’t know why. Is it because I’m reaching my 3 year mark at work and I’m getting bored? I don’t know about that. The work is still challenging and I keep busy. Yes its been the longest I’ve ever been at a company, but I don’t think I’m bored or not even challenged here. Maybe I just am feeling rebellious and free of mind and just want to do something on my own, whether it be my own company, or the aforementioned winning the lotto and doing whatever the hell I want?
I’ve said in the past and will continue to say so all the time. Whenever someone asks me how my work is, I’m like its ok. Its just work. I don’t care how challenging it is, or how busy I get or whatever, its just work. Unless its my own company, my own creation, my own baby, I will never be as passionate about it as probably executives wish for me to be. Sorry, that’s just how it is. Why would I work my butt off, kill myself, for a set salary with a ceiling? If it was my own company, I’d want it to do well, no matter how much work it took. But, working my ass off to earn already rich executives more money? Hell no. I work hard, yes. Passionate? No.
So, getting back to my original thoughts. Vegas anyone? Or wherever. I need to get away again, get my mind on fun stuff!
Last week, my nephew was circumcised during his bris. It was a huge deal, lots of family showed up, and yes he is all good, healthy and safe now. But, this has nothing to do with that event, but rather of circumcision.
What exactly about circumcision you ask? I know what a circumcision is. I’ve read about what it is, its description, its potential benefits or uselessness, etc. But, to be perfectly honest, I had no idea if I was circumcised or not. Seriously. I have never, ever seen any man’s penis other than my own. Call me homophobic or what, but sorry, I never once cared to see or look for a picture of a penis to tell the difference between a circumcised one or not.
Yes, you can read all the descriptions you want, but I have no idea what it means when it says the “foreskin” is removed. WTF is a foreskin? If its removed, how the hell would I know what it looks like? I know what the head of a penis is yes, but is it covered by the prepuce? No freaking clue. Yes, I’ve seen movies where a man’s full frontal was shown, like Crying Game or Wild Things or even Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but trust me when I say that I did not look for more than a few milliseconds at that particular part of the screen and I doubt the camera zoomed in close enough to show any details. I don’t care if its for comedy or whatever, its gross.
So for all you guys out there, if you know whether or not you are circumcised, did you know because you just looked down and knew what one looked like, or did like your mother or doctor tell you? LOL.
I pretty much never buy birthday cards. If you get a birthday card from me, its probably because I chipped in on your gift with someone else and they bought the card and I put my name to it. I just bought a wedding card couple hours ago, and now I know why. Cards are hella expensive!!! For what they are, why the hell does a card cost more than a buck?? Its freaking thick paper folded in half!! Is there a higher profit margin consumer product out there? And please don’t tell me that you are paying for the inspirational or funny words in the cards. Those things were not created or thought of by Hallmark or American Greetings or whoever. More often than not they are poems or sayings that they probably found on the Internet and put in a card.
Yes, I know 5 bucks isn’t a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. But, look at all the things you can buy for 5 bucks that are so worth it when compared to a piece of folded paper and envelope. Yes, yes, I know there are those out there who are sentimental and they think getting or giving a card is very special and such. But, let me just ask you something. Most of the time, I do not see anyone writing in the card other than saying to and from. Maybe a short message at best. So, what makes it special? The fact that they just put their name in it? I can tell you right now that I have every letter and message that has ever been written to me in my closet. But, cards that solely have my name and signed by the giver, no. I toss those. There is nothing special about those to me. Next time you are thinking of getting me a card for any reason whatsoever, save yourself the 5 bucks. If you are just going to sign it, I’m going to toss it anyway, so its just like tossing 5 bucks away. If you really want me to think it is special and for me to keep it, write me a small note on a regular piece of paper, which will probably cost a penny at most. Less expensive, more thought provoking, and actually nice and special in my book.
It is so hard that I want to say its human nature. Humans take life for granted. Its just a fact, and I don’t know if anyone can prove to me that on a long term basis, a person can just always do things now and not put them off to tomorrow, or later. I think part of it is that humans are forgiving and forgetful in the long term. How many times have things happened that profoundly changed your life immediately, but over time, its as if it never happened? True, there are exceptions, but after time, things always go back to “normal.”
So, I will give my spiel to live your life to the fullest. Do not wait until you are nearly out of time before you just do what you want to do. If you want to travel do it. If you want to ask that girl out, do it. Don’t think that there is always tomorrow because history has proven 100% of the time that its not the case.
It rained pretty much all day yesterday, and today, it was “cold” all day. Yes, yes, most of the US laughs at us So Cal’s when we complain that it is cold, but it is!! You people don’t realize that cold is always a relative thing. If you are used to it being 75 all the time, and then the high for the day is only 55, your body feels cold!
Sure, if you are from the east coast and then you visit, you can walk around in shorts all day and feel fine. But, if you are from the east coast, and then move here and are here for a few years, trust me, you will get cold too. I have friends in that situation so I have proof! So the next time you non So Cal’s tell us we are wimps, I say STFU. We both know you are just jealous.
I went to see my orthodontist today after work, my first appointment in 6 months. Went in, she saw that my retainers still fit nicely, and said she would see me again in 6 months, and that will be the last time I see her. No adjustments needed, just warned me to continue to just wear them at night, and that if I skip for a few days, then put them back in. Do not at all not wear them for months at a time or my teeth will go back to being crooked, or at least less straight. As I said in the last post I wrote about my braces, there is still a tiny gap on the top that pretty much only a dentist would notice so I don’t really care.
So, how is it having to wear my retainers only at night? Its not that big a deal. I pretty much put them in after I brush my teeth at night, then when I wake up, I take them out, put them in some efferdent, and then put them in the retainer case only to do it all over again later on that night. The very first time that I was able to leave them out during the day and then put them on at night, the retainers felt very tight, almost painful. However, now that I’m used to not wearing them throughout the day, when I put them back in at night, no big deal. Just feels normal.
I am really supposed to wear them only at night for the rest of my life. But, don’t know if that will last. I can definitely see myself wearing them only at night in the short term, at least the next couple years. But rest of my life? Who knows. It is not an inconvenience really, but who knows if I have the discipline to keep it up. I really do not want to have to have my teeth go crooked again and thus wear braces again, so maybe that will keep me disciplined? Here’s a thought, what is more likely to happen, I stop putting in my retainers nightly or I stop updating jasers.com regularly? Hmmmm, only time will tell huh?
So, as you all know by now, I got a new 15″ macbook pro and have had it for a month or so now. I had been carrying it around by hand whenever I left the house with it, and got sick of doing so. Thus, I decided to get a bag for it.
I normally walk around with a small bag, what my woman calls a man purse, and carry various things in there like my DS, a book to read whenever I need to pass time, my camera, etc. However, its too small to put my laptop in. I did some searching on the internet to see what was out there. I decided that I did not want a backpack, and I also did not want one of those bags that look like a work briefcase. I wanted something that I can wear on one shoulder, similar to my current bag but obviously bigger.
Went to Best Buy and saw a few, but didn’t like how any of them looked. Looked on Amazon, and I came across the Brenthaven Switch Messenger bag. Why is it called the Switch? Because the flap can be replaced or flipped around so that it looks like you have an entirely new design on the bag. The costs $99.95, however, I found it on Amazon for $60, so bought it. I love Amazon.
I’ve had the the bag a couple weeks now, and what do I think? Its quite a bit bigger than my other bag, both in size and in weight, even when the Macbook is not in it. So, I’m not used to it and not really liking that at the moment. My laptop fits nicely in there, and its surrounded by some cushioning all around. Probably enough cushioning to protect it from bumps and such, but doubtful that it would help with a flat out dropping of the bag. I am using the gray flap, which I think looks better than the black one on the other side. There are also quite a lot of pockets and spaces to put things, like my aforementioned book, DS, and camera. Plus more. Within the flap there is also a rain cover you can take out to cover your bag and protect your belongings from getting wet, which is kind of cool.
Carrying it around, I need to get used to the extra size and weight of my bigger bag. However, I like the bag and would recommend it to anyone who wants a messenger bag to carry their laptop around. If you do not carry your laptop out very often, then I’d probably say that you would be more comfortable carrying around a smaller bag when not having your laptop and then using this bag when you are. Go to Brenthaven’s website to see pictures of the bag as well as the flaps you can guy with it. They say that they have a lifetime guarantee on it, but who knows what that is good for.
I have never been a fan of first person shooters. They didn’t make me dizzy or anything, I just didn’t really enjoy them all that much, outside of something like the Halo games and only when it was multi-player with a bunch of my friends. Whenever I played the single player campaign modes of Halo, I could not get into it. That all changed with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I don’t even know how many hours I played that game, both multi-player as well as the single player mode which I enjoyed. Its definitely in the hundreds and I’m not exaggerating that. I just enjoyed the game, and can’t really explain why. Graphics were great, story was fun, and even though I sucked on the multi-player mode with probably a kill to death ratio of 1:2, I played and played and played.
I then got Call of Duty: World at War. I played for maybe the 1st 4 levels and then got bored. I just didn’t like it. I don’t know why. Is it because it takes place in the WWII era? I don’t know. I just could not get into the game and sold it.
And then Modern Warfare 2 came out and I bought pretty much the week in came out. I am really enjoying the game, and if it weren’t for the fact that I don’t have enough time, I’d play it a lot more than I currently do. For the most part, it seems to be the same game as COD4, only with a different story. Its quite fun. The war actually takes place at times in the United States, so its kind of surreal fighting a war in a suburb that could be your own home. I don’t know why, but I just enjoy this ten times better than when it took place in the WWII era. I have not played the multi-player mode yet, for reasons I stated earlier with respect to time. However, I’m sure that it will be quite similar to its predecessor and I will enjoy it.
One final thing though with respect to this game. There is a level on this game that is very controversial, so much so that there is a message at the beginning of the game that tells you that this level exists and asks you if you want to skip it. Obviously, when a message is put like that, everyone will choose to play it, just out of curiosity. I was one of those people. The level involves you playing a deep undercover agent who falls in with a terrorist group. What is the mission? You go on a rampage of an airport and go killing civilians. It is quite wrong, in my opinion and not really necessary. Its one thing to shoot bad guys, or even play a bad guy and shoot the good guy armies. But to go around a killing spree of innocent people at an airport, well, its kind of disturbing. You can actually just walk around following the terrorist group as they shoot everyone without having to shoot anyone yourself, but still, I thought it was too much.
That being said, I still think its a great game, and if you liked COD4, getting this game is a no brainer. If you didn’t like it, well, this game once again will not be for you.
I am trying to learn objective C so that I can help write some programs/applications for the iPhone. I don’t have much of a programming language, so when I was reading documentation on it, well, it literally was a foreign language to me and I was totally lost. I downloaded some sample assignment and was attempting to do it. However, I just was not able to, even thought probably anyone else out there with half a programming brain could do it in a few minutes. I tried searching for help online, but when you don’t know what to search for because you don’t know the vocabulary, it makes it hard to search.
So, I finally gave up and looked for a book online. I downloaded it (no I didn’t steal it, it was free) and I also printed up a lot of documentation and bound them like books. So, now I have hundreds of pages to go through to learn. Whether or not I actually learn it or become proficient, I believe these hard copies on paper and books are my best way of learning, not by reading things online. I don’t know why, but for me, reading online is not as effective for me as it is on paper. Why? No clue. Is it because there are too many distractions on the computer? I don’t know. I just know that when I sit at my desk and just read a book, it sinks in that much better. Its funny because I actually enjoy reading a newspaper more than I do searching news sites online. Is it the same effect?
I think that when I actually get down to learning this new language, I will sit at a desk or my bed and just read, with my laptop on in case there is an assignment to do. Then I can look back and forth. That to me is just the most effective way for me. I wrote earlier that I had taken some online classes, and while the teacher was good, its just not the same for me. I cannot learn online. I have to do it in person, in the class. Am I just old school? Probably. But, there are a lot of people my age who can do things online, so its not strictly a “I grew up that way” thing. Guess some people are just different than others and for me, old fashioned books on paper and teachers in person in a classroom is my cup of tea. That being said, I think outside of actually taking an actual class at a school for objective C, I am giving myself the best chance I can in learning it with this hard copy documentation. That and with the help of my friend, let’s hope I succeed and do not hold back my friend!
I was driving to work and traffic was much heavier than it usually is for the morning rush. Sitting in traffic, thinking I’m going to be late…oh well. I finally get to the cause of all of this, and what do I see? I motorcycle lying on its side, and the apparent driver lying face up on the ground with, I would assume, the people who hit him standing over on the cell phone probably calling 911. Here is what I don’t get and what no one will ever be able to convince me otherwise. Why in the world would you drive a motorcycle regularly.
There is no argument out there that makes it worth it. It saves money on gas. True. You can drive in the carpool lane and even between cars, thus saving you commute time. True. Its more fun than driving a car. Subjectively true. And there are probably tons more that motorcycle riders can tell me. You know what? All are probably true. But all of that is moot!!
You can be the safest motorcycle driver in the world. You can drive defensively. Have the best reflexes. Make the best and safest decisions while driving. I will grant you that even if you do all this and never, ever make a mistake, it still does not even matter. Why? Because all it takes is for one stupid driver to not pay attention or just an idiot who never should have gotten his license to ram into you and its pretty much game over. And you know what? There are a lot more than 1 bad driver on the freeways at any given time. A lot more. You see it everyday yourselves when you are navigating those freeways.
So yes, all of your arguments are true. I’m not saying that you can’t die driving a car. But, a minor accident in a car is not likely to hurt you. A minor accident while on a motorcycle? Not exactly the same. You weigh 200 pounds. The car that hits you? Maybe 3,000 pounds. Who do you think is going to win that collision? I’m not saying that you can drive a motorcycle. Just go dirt biking or something like that, treating it like an extreme sport such as paintball or skydiving or whatever. But to drive on a bike everyday on the roads with tons of crappy drivers surrounding you? Is your life really worth the few dollars you save on gas money? If you say yes its quite sad, but I’d venture that most of you would say no.
