T-22

I got to watch this Friday night after dinner with the gang.  It was “only an hour and a half” so everybody was able to go.  :)   Anyway, what’s this movie about?  If you have seen the trailers, basically its about a former government agent who’s daughter is kidnapped.  But, she is kidnapped while talking to him on the phone, and seeing as how he is a former super agent, he is able to deduce all he needs from that phone call to find her.  He goes on to tell the kidnappers on that call that if they do not return his daughter, he will find them and he will kill them!  And so he proceeds on this mission.

The movie, like I said at the beginning, is not very long.  It just gets to the point, with no extraneous material.  Liam Neeson really is a super agent because he is able to take out like a dozen guys without getting hit.  He reminds me of a poor man’s Jack Bauer in this movie.  I found it kind of funny that throughout the movie, he is able to take out bad guys on their own home turf by surprising them behind corners and such.  He did this so many times. Shouldn’t the bad guys know where their own corners and hiding places are in their home field?!!

Anyway, besides that little nitpicking, the movie was entertaining to watch.  Liam Neeson is no Jack Bauer in this movie, as I think he is much older, and much more low key sounding than Jack.  He pretty much never raises his voice in the entire movie, that I recall.  You’ll never hear him yelling something like “Holster your weapon!!”  But, he is no stranger to action roles, as he has been in Batman Begins as well as a Star Wars movie.  I did like his character and thought he was for the most part cool.  I didn’t like his daughter for whatever reason.  She runs funny.  I don’t know why the actress who plays her (Maggie Grace) runs like that.  It totally reminded me of Phoebe from Friends.  Oh well, the movie’s not really about her per se.  She’s just the person who needs to be rescued.  Overall, the movie was short, to the point and fun.  Nothing that will stress your brain watching, so just go sit down, relax and watch it.

Freaking loud motorcycles

3

This past Saturday, I was rudely awakened by my stupid neighbor’s Harley-Davidson.  It wasn’t even 7:00 am yet and he cranked that shit up and drove away.  Not only was it loud, it caused more than one car alarm to go off.  WTF?!!??  How is it legal that these stupid Harley’s are so loud??  Don’t even tell me its a safety issue because there are tons of motorcycles out there that are no where near as loud as a stupid Harley.  I normally don’t ever give a crap what people do, unless it affects me.

If you want to ride your Harley, walk that shit all the way down the street, then start it.  It doesn’t really bother me on public roads, even though its loud as hell there too.  Its freaking ridiculous.  Don’t use that safety shit on my either.  If it were about safety, then all motorcycles would be that loud.  And if you are worried about safety, drive a fucking car.  How is this legal?  You know what?  I don’t think it is legal.  I think that the police just let it go because Harley is an American company.  I’ve seen Rice Rockets pulled over many times, and those are no where near as loud as a stupid Harley.  Loud is also, I suppose, subjective.  Knowing the stupid laws in this country as they are, you probably can’t be ticketed unless the volume is at a certain decibel.  And I highly doubt cops normally carry that equipment to measure it like they do a radar detector or a breath analyzer.  Yeah, great law huh?

But it shouldn’t even be about laws in this case.  If my dog for whatever reason barks in the middle of the night, I put her in the garage?  Why??  Because I don’t want to wake my neighbors.  Its common fucking courtesy.  And I guarantee you that my dog does not bark anywhere near as loud as that guy’s Harley.  At the very minimum, just don’t drive that jet engine so early in the morning.  Is that too much to ask??  Apparently so, and I guess I just expect too much from people.  My stupidity.

Earliest memory I can recall

1

So, everyone who knows me knows that I have the worst memory ever.  I can’t remember things that just happened, let alone months ago.  Its not even that I have a vague recollection of something happening.  I just totally forget about it, as if it never happened, and I will swear that it didn’t cuz it’s not in my memory.

So, that being said, I’ve decide to try to write about the earliest memory that I can remember.  And you know what?  I didn’t have to think long for this one.  I don’t know exactly how old I was, but I can probably figure it out logically.  I used to take walks with my parents way back when.  And we would always take the same route.  Sometimes just my mom, sometimes mom and dad.  But, what I remember the most was that we would always walk in front of a new elementary school being built.  And while walking past it, I’d be told that this is where I will be going to kindergarten, when it finishes.  I do not even remember being all that excited when told this, but for whatever reason, I remember it to this day.

I wonder why that is?  I think it has something to do with my parents.  One of the proudest moments I’ve ever had was my very first day of college.  I got ready to go, then went to my mom’s room to tell her bye and that I was leaving for school.  She had the hugest smile that I can remember saying bye and have fun, as if I was a little kid starting school for the first time and being so proud.  I wasn’t even all that excited about school.  It was just like whatever.  But when I saw her smile, with a look of pride on her face, it just made me feel all good inside.  I don’t know why, but I just remember that vividly, and I started smiling all proud myself as I walked down the stairs.

Anyway, going back to my earlist memory, let’s see, you start kindergarten when you are 5 years old right?  It probably took at least months if not years to build the school.  So, I’d estimate that I was maybe 4 years old when this happened, at the earliest 3.  I do vaguely remember crying whenever my parents dropped me off for pre-school, but this memory is the earliest, clear memory I can recall without thinking too much about it.  Once kindergarten started, I recall much, much more.  Does that mean that our memory really starts to kick in when we are about 5 years old?

On a side note, I always find it funny when kids that are like 1 or 2 have tons of toys.  I have absolutely no memory of that time.  I mean absolutely none.  Do toys when you are that young really help you in any way?  Its hard to say.  Don’t get me wrong.  If I have kids I will buy toys and stuff for them.  But, just out of curiosity, have there been studies done that show kids need to have toys of some sort when they are that young?

Technology is ageist

1

I always find it amusing that my dad, while not totally computer illiterate, struggles with using the computer, not knowing how to do stuff.  And most of the stuff he asks me or my brother help on is so basic that I don’t even have to think about it.  Often times, he will ask me the same question over and over again over the years and months because he just doesn’t pick it up.  And my mom?  She could not turn on a computer for the life of her.

But its not even just my parents.  Over the years, I’ve worked at many different places, and I’ve found that the older employees just had a much harder time using computers than I did.  Sure, they could do the basics and get their work done.  But, there were so many other things the computer could of done for them to make their jobs easier, but they just didn’t comprehend or realize it.

And you know what?  I don’t think they are stupid or anything.  They just grew up in a different generation, and all this stuff is new to them.  Honestly though, I didn’t grow up with all this stuff either.  However, I picked it up at a young age, and that is very important in learning things.  Technology is constantly evolving and as it does, it is always the older people who get lost in the shuffle.

It makes me wonder.  In 30 years, am I going to be as dense about using that generation’s technology?  Are my kids going to be constantly answering the same questions over and over again about how to use something?  I’d like to think no, because I consider myself pretty smart and I read up on what’s going on in the world, both in and out of technology.  But, that might not be enough.  I can tell you already that, for example, there are video games nowadays that are just too advanced and complicated for my liking.  They use too many buttons or schemes or whatever.  And, what I’ve found out over the years is that you are a lot less likely to pick up or learn something if you don’t want to learn it!  So, here’s to enjoying all the high tech gadgets and stuff now while I’m young, because in 30 years they will frustrate the hell out of me!

Push

1

PUSH

Saw this last Friday night, and I don’t even know if I want to describe what this movie was about because I did not think it was very good at all.  There are these people born with certain powers in the world, and they have been classified.  Watchers can see the future, movers are telekinetics, pushers can put thoughts into someone’s head, etc.  There is some government agency called Division that experiments on these people to enhance their powers, but all these people they experiment on die.  One, however, survives and escapes, and so they try to capture her.  That’s kind of what the movie is about, but there are other parts to it.  It doesn’t matter though, because like I said, this movie was not very good.

Have you ever watched a movie that tries to be confusing and complicated just so they can say that they are a good movie?  I think that’s what the writers tried to do here.  The movie made absolutely no sense.  And it was long, or at least seemed it!  Having a movie about people with powers has been done before.  Just make it fun and simple and you will be much better off.  Its on thing to be confusing, but to have the story not make sense is just not right.  The movie had some decent effects, but nothing that is great.  And there was no one character that I really liked in the movie.  And on a totally different tangent.  Dakota Fanning plays a 12 year old in this movie.  Nothing wrong with that.  But who was the genius that decided to clothe her in a super mini skirt the whole movie?  There is something disturbing about that.  She’s 12 in the movie!

Anyway, I’d stay clear of this movie.  There are other action movies with B list stars that you will find much better than this one.

Some random whatevers

1

Haven’t had one of these in a while, so…

Why do Republicans complain and complain about Obama’s stimulus package spending billions of dollars irresponsibly, but they turn a blind eye when its pointed out that billions and billions have been and continue to be spent in Iraq on a war they claim to this day is necessary?  At least Obama’s plan spends the money on Americans, and no lives are lost.

I think my metabolism has finally caught up with me and I can no longer eat whatever I want and not gain a pound because of it.  Tell my flabby belly that.

If any guys out there, for whatever reason, want to steal a guy’s wallet, but cannot do it without the guy noticing, then read on.  Go into the men’s bathroom, and wait by the urinal.  When a guy comes, unzips and starts peeing, then grab the wallet out of his back pocket and take off!  First of all, it takes a guy some time to stop peeing.  Secondly, when he finally does stop, he will zip up before chasing you.  That gives you a huge head start!

I’m addicted to my cell phone, can’t be without it, and rely way too much on it.

I got my friend upset at me last night, and was called a jerk by another friend because of that.  In fact, I actually got lectured by this second friend about how it was all my fault, and that I had to do whatever it took to make up for it.  I’ve never been called a jerk before.  Its quite a humbling experience.

I really like Lost so far this year.  I don’t know how they are going to end the show, but I’m really enjoying the season so far.

I can’t seem to find the time and balance to do everything I want.  There are books I want to read, movies and TV to watch, video games to play.  Just not enough time.

My stupid tire keeps leaking air, and I have to refill it every week.  I complain, but I’m too lazy to go and get it fixed.  I think I’ll keep refilling it every week until I have to buy new tires.  Hopefully that won’t be too much longer…

Economic ramifications

1

So anyone who isn’t living with their head in the sand knows that our country, and the world for that matter, is having one of the largest financial problems in history.  To say that we are in a recession would be putting it lightly.  People are losing jobs left and right, they are losing their homes, they are having a hard time spending on necessities, etc. Its quite sad and depressing.

But, and knock on wood, it hasn’t really affected me personally, yet.  I still have a stable job with a company that is actually doing quite well we’re told.  My family are all employed still.  But, I have had multiple friends who have lost their jobs, and that sucks.  I’ve tried helping them find work at my place, since we actually do have openings, but so far no luck.

Its actually quite sad that we are where we are.  This is exactly why I always tell everyone that you have to look out for yourself, because no one else will.  Always keep that resume updated and keep an eye out for yourself.  When a company is in trouble financially, you can bet that little old worker bee you will be let go well before anyone in management does.  Which is why I always find it funny that our generation gets a bad rap for job hopping.  If employers are not loyal to employees, then why should employees be loyal to employers?  Why not go for the higher paying job? (No I’m not looking for a job.  I like my job.  I like my boss, my coworkers.  And even if I didn’t, look at the subject of this post.  Where would I find a job???)

But honestly, its situations like these that I hate the 24 hour news networks.  There is just too many news channels out there, and not enough real news to justify it.  Everywhere you turn, you hear about how bad the economy is, how this and that has to be done.  You hear tips on what can be done to save a few bucks.  And do you know what really bugs me the most about all this?  Literally every single anchor on any of these news channels that you listen to makes a substantial, minimum 6 figure salary.  They have no freaking clue what its like to be poor, to have their jobs threatened, to be lower to middle class.  They can report all this doom and gloom, they can even sound sad and such when reporting it, but at the end of the day, they will be going home to their huge expensive houses and not have a clue as to what it feels like to be the people they are actually reporting on.

Its the exact same reason that I hate politicians actually.  Almost every freaking one of them was rich before they even came to power, or are rich now.  Why the hell would they give a crap about little old me or you?  They either don’t know what its like to be poor, or they’ve long forgotten.  Like I said at the beginning of this post.  You have to look out for yourself because no one else will.

Wanting something you can’t have

3

Is it true that people want or desire things that they cannot have?  I’m being broad here, whether it be girls, gadgets, cars, toys, etc.?  I’m trying to think if that is really true.  I think on some levels it is, but it doesn’t drive what I want.  I see a lot of stuff that I can’t ever afford in my life, and those objects are not any more desirable to me.  If I ask a girl out, and she turns me down, I don’t think I’d like her even more just because she turned me down.

I think that this is more true for younger people than it is for others.  I had many friends in school who were not allowed to date because of their parents.  And you know what most of them did?  They dated.  My friend tells me that she will not let her kid date.  School is for studying not dating.  And you know what I tell her?  Your kid is going to date, just do it behind your back.  So, why don’t you just allow her to date, so that you can make sure she dates a good guy, rather than have her date behind your back and possibly be with scum of the earth.  I was never prohibited from dating, never really prohibited from anything for that matter, so maybe I just don’t comprehend.  The dating part of my life was practically non-existent in school.  Was it because I wasn’t disallowed from doing so?  I kind of doubt it.  I think I was just too shy and introverted in school

In any case, I don’t think wanting something that you can’t have is wrong or anything.  In fact, to a certain degree, I think its actually natural.  There is a reason there is a term called keeping up with the Joneses.  Where it becomes a problem, I think, is if you let it actually drive how you live.  If you are always striving for the unobtainable, true, you might on the rare occassion be successful, but in general you are just looking to be disappointed.

Slumdog Millionaire

0

slumdog

Slumdog Millionaire is a movie about a teenage orphan growing up in the slums of India.  He gets onto the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, where he is on the verge of becoming a millionaire.  The shows breaks for the night, and he is subsequently taken by the police, on suspicion of cheating.  While being questioned, he tells his story of growing up in the slums as an orphan with his brother, and of his lost love, the beautiful Latika, played by Freida Pinto.  Does he become a millionaire and find his long lost love?

I saw this movie over the weekend.  For those that don’t know, it is one of the nominees for Best Picture this year.  Everyone that I talked to loved the movie.  Almost everyone made it sound like it was some feel good movie.  They’d tell me it was about an orphan who goes on to the show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and I was thinking, oh, a sweet movie then.  I didn’t know until after the fact that it’s actually rated R, and is quite a bit more serious film then that.  Well, its not super serious and dark or anything, but not like a Disney family flick or anything like that either.  But, it does have a good story containing common Hollywood themes like overcoming impossible odds, family bonds, and of course love.

And after watching the movie, I have to agree with everyone that I talked to and say that it was a very good movie and I really liked it.  Its a bit longer than I thought it would be, but not too long.  I can see why so many people and critics love this movie, and why it was nominated.  Good story, likable main character, and a beautiful lead actress.  Not that anybody doesn’t already know this, but having a beautiful actress in a picture may  not make the picture great, but it never ever hurts.  Anyway, I’d totally tell everyone to watch this movie because I really liked it.  Watch it and let me know what you think.

He’s Just Not That Into You

1

scarlett

I saw this on President’s Day with my friend, and after my other friend, who watched it twice, told me to see it.  The film is not necessarily about a guy who’s not into a girl.  In general, its a relationship movie.  Its one of those movies like Love Actually, Snatch, Babel, etc. where there are basically many different characters that are very loosely related, but each of the characters have their own story.  Thus, this movie has like half a dozen different storylines, all centered on relationships between a guy and a girl. and all about the person not understanding the mind of the opposite sex.  There’s the girl who always goes on dates and thinks the guy is into her but he never calls her back.  There’s the couple that has been going out forever but the guy refuses to marry because he doesn’t believe in it.  There’s the guy who is totally into a girl, but she just is not into him.  There’s the married couple in which the husband is attracted to another woman, etc., etc.

I thought the movie, as it pretty much has to in order to entertain, takes the most extreme of all relationship types and puts them in this movie.  Obviously they can’t put the “average” relationship in here or it’d make for a dull film.  When watching this movie, I guarantee everyone will have gone through some form of what some of the characters have gone through, or at least know some people who have.  For that reason, I think that some people may have a liking for it.  If anything, I think its a movie that makes for good conversation with friends who have seen it, asking them if you’ve been through that, is what they said true, and stuff like that.  I think that any film which gets you to talk about it afterward is not a bad thing.

Some of the stuff in the movie I think are totally true or does happen in real life, but not all of it, and some is definitely, IMO, exaggerated.  I do think, however, that some of the stories were entirely predictable and I knew how they’d turn out in the end.  Go watch it and let me know what you think.  I have a spoiler below this, so if you don’t want to know about it, stop reading the rest of this post.

SPOILER

The only thing I have to say about this film that without a doubt is entirely untrue is Scarlett Johansson ending the film single.  Ummm, right.  Only the hottest woman, but doesn’t have a guy at the end?  Hmmm, right.
